2017 is all about comfortable fashion. Sky-high stilettos have been pushed aside by low block heels, sling bags have been side-lined by chic oversized bags and skinny jeans has been replaced by loose comfortable trousers like Palazzos and Culottes.
The trend that I am covering today is Culottes. Alternatively called as gauchos, Culottes are your gateway to chic but comfortable dressing.
Confused between Culottes and Palazzos?
Culottes are the cropped version of palazzos and give the appearance of a skirt.
Culottes are the most chaotic piece of fashion item ever! They are not pants, nor shorts, or skirts, not too long, not too short, and pretty tricky to style.
Culottes are not as formal as trousers, but neither are as casual as a pair of shorts. They have a great feminist history too, having become popular in Victorian England for allowing ladies to secretly wear shorts while it looked like they were wearing skirts.
Culottes, or “divided skirts”, were trousers in disguise that let these women ride horses and play tennis without any discomfort.
We’d be lying if we said we didn’t find them hard to style. Culottes can be a pretty hard trend to swallow, but it’s worth it. We get to step out of our comfort zones, play more with shape, and experiment. Remember, it’s all about turning heads! 😉
How to style Culottes?
Culottes are best styled with a fitted cropped top. For a semi-formal look, dress these cropped pants in a blazer and a pair of heels. For a casual look, style with flats and a tee. If you are stepping out of your comfort zone and trying these for the first time, I suggest you stick to basic colors like black, white, or beige.
A very cool effect of culottes is that they put your footwear on display; and if your shoe game is on point, you’ll want to flaunt your footgear. Heels will make culottes look smarter, office appropriate, and posh. Flats with Culottes look very French chic, as do oxfords or brogues.
For my look, I chose mustard Culottes and paired them with a pretty white top having a long tatter (I call them my tentacles :p) dangling from it. While I was buying this pair of cropped trousers, I had a color choice between the classic white, navy blue, and mustard; and after pondering – for quite some time – over which one to take, I just couldn’t ignore the zesty yellow cropped pants and got them home with me.
Yellow pants – they are oh so legit!
I completed my outfit with all white accessories; yes that’s a new trend for 2017, but we will take it up some other time.
Signing off for now!
But before that, tried some funky poses for the post, sharing one:
Mission accomplished if you are smiling!
Until next time!
